Apple integration

Never the Twain, Jobs or Gates shall meet!

Mark Twain once wrote It is easier to stay out than get out” which could have been a great metaphor for the differences between Microsoft and Apple technologies, however in the past few years as Apple has made such a confident transition from the corporate ‘creative’ departments and specialist companies working in design, media, architecture and print to the mainstream work environment, IT departments are having to understand how to work with this ‘alien’ technology and increasingly integrate it into their windows environments.

The adoption of the Mac in the home along with the widespread adoption of the iPhone and increasingly the iPad has spurred something akin to a revolution that is fuelled by ‘the consumerisation of IT’ and a slow but increasing acceptance by industry to provide a ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) capability, whereby employees can connect their own devices to the corporate network and its applications.

One of our own clients – Cisco, demonstrated the potential and impact of opening the IT department to all manner of problems when they introduced their BYOD strategy in 2009. Of the 55,000 employees almost 19000 went and brought a Mac to work.
